FoR-to-ARC-Discipline-Panel Lookup processes nominated Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) Fields of Research (FoR) 2020 Field codes, which must be nominated by applicants in all Australian Research Council (ARC) applications, to indicate how such nominations typically determine the assignment of an application to discipline panels.
In the assessment of heavily subscribed ARC funding schemes, the Selection Advisory Committee (SAC) is divided into discipline panels, with panel membership determined by broadly defined discipline areas. The FoR Field codes nominated in an application will normally determine the panel by which the application will be considered. For instance, the distribution of FoR Field codes across panels for the assessment of Discovery Project applications is:
- Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (BSB): 30; 31; 32; 41; 4201; 4207; 4208; 4299; 4503; 4509; 4515
- Engineering, Information and Computing Sciences (EIC): 3302; 3303; 40; 4506; 4512; 4517; 46
- Humanities and Creative Arts (HCA): 3301; 3399; 36; 43; 4401; 4405; 4499; 4501; 4507; 4513; 4519; 4599; 47; 48; 50
- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences (MPCE): 34; 37; 49; 51
- Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences (SBE): 3304; 35; 38; 39; 42; 44; 45; 52
Some panels are combined for the assessment of applications to certain funding schemes. The combination of HCA and SBE is known as Humanities and Creative Arts, Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences (HSE). BSB and MPCE are sometimes combined and referred to in selection reports as BSB/MPCE.
ARC Executive Directors review the appropriateness of the applications in each panel and may transfer applications to different panels. They also identify cross-disciplinary applications that need General Assessors from more than one panel. Cross-panel applications are applications with General Assessors on more than one panel assessing the application, which arises due to the cross-disciplinary nature of some applications. This may also arise due to FoR Field code nominations that do not consider the distribution of codes across the panels.
