Word Cloud Generator for ARC Grant Application Development assists Australian Research Council (ARC) grant applicants in visualising key elements of their grant applications, as well as publicly available information about the expertise of potential detailed assessors, for example, in the ARC's Grants Dataset. By generating word clouds, applicants can identify, and strategically emphasise or de-emphasise, expertise overlaps with potential assessors. This tool approximates the ARC's grant application assessment process, which involves comparison of similar word clouds, with the addition of interactive elements for research strategy-related purposes.
The Australian Research Council's (ARC) grant application assessment process uses word clouds within the Research Management System (RMS) to visualise key elements of the project under assessment. Words that appear more frequently are displayed in larger font sizes, highlighting their significance. The visualisations support the assignment of the grant application to detailed assessors who possess the required expertise.
So-called proposal word clouds are generated from a grant application's project title, project summary, and classification codes—that is, nominated ANZSRC 2020 Fields of Research (FoR) Field codes, and, occasionally, Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) Objective codes.
detailed assessors' word clouds highlight areas of overlap between their expertise and the grant application under consideration. The word clouds visualise detailed assessors' recorded expertise in RMS, including nominated FoR Field codes and previously submitted ARC grant applications.
RMS ranks potential assessors based on how closely their expertise matches the grant application under consideration, with the highest-ranked assessors appearing at the top of the list.
